Experiential Feature Things to Do

The Ultimate Newport Harbor Experience: Dining on a Duffy Boat with Dockside Takeaway

An experiential feature to give you an inside look at a fun and COVID-19 friendly thing to do in Orange County.

COVID-19 has limited our options for things to do and places to go.

When we heard that Duffy Boat rental businesses reopened earlier this month, we jumped for joy and started planning the ultimate dining on the water experience.

While planning our excursion, we discovered that The Cannery, a restaurant in Newport Beach, had started to offer their electric Duffy Boat for rent.

We loved the fact that The Cannery’s Duffy boat was larger than most at 22 feet and was social distance friendly so we booked it.

The Duffy Boat was gorgeous and delivered on the space we needed. While we only had 6 people in our crew, The Cannery’s Duffy Boat can seat up to 12.

We had two goals for this excursion:

1) To get the feeling of escapism on the beautiful Newport Harbor.

2) To showcase the availability of dockside takeout for the ultimate dining experience on the water.

With our goals mind, we opted to start our excursion with light bites & drinks from The Cannery and we planned to stop at Louie’s by the Bay, a waterfront restaurant in Newport Beach, for dockside takeaway.

While it’s no secret to boat owners that dockside takeout is a thing, many people who rent Duffy Boats don’t realize that you can park in a restaurant’s slip and order food-to-go.

There are approximately 20 restaurants on the Newport Harbor that offer dockside takeout and/or the availably to dock and dine-in.

If you are renting a boat, dockside takeout is an amazing offering so you can enjoy all of your time on the water.

Our dockside takeout dinner from Louie’s at the Bay was delicious. The pasta, salad, and cocktails to go was the perfect dinner on the water – casual yet delicious and hearty.

Pro tip: Order cocktails to-go and bring festive cups for photo opportunities.

Escaping on the Duffy Boat for this excursion was a dream! It provided us with something to do and the availability to eat takeout somewhere other than our homes.

Since our trip, several waterfront restaurants have opened for dine-in experiences but nothing beats having a dining experience on the water in a Duffy Boat – a must for your bucket list this summer.

The Cannery and other Duffy boat rental businesses are disinfecting the boats after each rental to continue to make this a fun and safe experience for all.
