Toddler-Friendly Summer Adventures in Orange County

Forget the same neighborhood playground. Orange County is filled with incredible family adventures that are worth the drive—from towering redwood forests and hidden ranches to splash parks, miniature trains, and watermelon fields.

Whether you’re raising a curious toddler or entertaining young kids, these experiences create the kind of summer memories that stick. Pack snacks, grab the stroller, and start checking off your Orange County Family Bucket List.

1. Meet Friendly Farm Animals at River Street Ranch

Nestled in San Juan Capistrano’s charming Los Rios Historic District, River Street Ranch is one of Orange County’s most delightful hidden gems for young families.

Little adventurers can pet and feed more than 80 friendly farm animals—including goats, sheep, pigs, horses, guinea pigs, llamas, alpacas, and even an emu—then climb aboard a miniature train, enjoy a tractor ride, pan for gems in the mining station, dig in the excavation area, and spend time at the playground.

2. Wander Through a Redwood Forest

Most people don’t expect to find towering coastal redwoods in Orange County, but tucked inside Carbon Canyon Regional Park is a peaceful grove of more than 200 majestic trees. The short, mostly flat trail makes it manageable with little ones, and the cool shade offers a welcome escape on warm summer mornings.

3. Build, Splash & Explore at Adventure Playground

Adventure Playground in Irvine isn’t your typical park. Kids can play in mud kitchens, splash in water features (when open), build forts, and enjoy imaginative outdoor play that’s increasingly hard to find.

4. Walk Along Heisler Park

Ocean views, public art, grassy lawns, tide pools, and walking paths make Heisler Park one of Orange County’s most beautiful places for families. Stop to watch surfers, look for seals offshore, or enjoy a picnic overlooking the Pacific.

5. Melon Tasting Tours at Tanka Farms

Summer at Tanaka Farms means tractor rides, farm fun, and melon tasting. Families can hop on a tractor around the farm, pick seasonal vegetables and then enjoy melon tasting with a melon to take home. Tickets are required.

6. Ride a Miniature Train

Hop aboard the Fairview Park miniature train and enjoy a charming ride through one of Costa Mesa’s largest parks. Afterwards, explore the trails, flying fields, and open spaces perfect for toddlers to roam.

7. Play by the Harbor at Marina Park

This waterfront park features a lighthouse-themed playground, sandy beach, calm bay waters, and front-row views of boats sailing through Newport Harbor. It’s one of the best places in Orange County for toddlers to safely play near the water.

8. Meet the Dinosaurs in Laguna Hills

Climb giant dinosaurs, dig in the sand, and enjoy one of Orange County’s most beloved playgrounds, Dinosaur Park. It’s a destination park that has been delighting local families for generations.

9. Huntington Beach's All-Inclusive Playground

Designed so children of all abilities can play together, this thoughtfully built playground features accessible equipment, sensory-friendly elements, and plenty of room to explore.

10. Toddler Days at Pretend City

Pretend City is already a favorite among young families, but Toddler Days are specially designed for the littlest visitors. With age-appropriate activities, smaller crowds, and plenty of opportunities for imaginative play, it’s an ideal introduction to hands-on learning. Tickets required.
