1. Stop and Smell the Flowers at Carlsbad Flower Fields

  • Dates: March 1 – May 12, 2025
  • Location: Carlsbad Ranch, Carlsbad

Okay, we know we are starting this list with something outside of Orange County, but it’s only a short drive south and a must-do for spring and worth the trip! The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch showcase nearly 50 acres of blooming Giant Tecolote Ranunculus, creating a breathtaking, colorful landscape. You can stroll through the fields, take a tractor wagon ride, and enjoy seasonal activities like flower arranging workshops while also enjoying some live music.

Tickets sell out quickly on weekends, so plan ahead!

2. Have a Picnic Among the Wildflowers at Crystal Cove

  • Dates: March – April, 2025
  • Location: Crystal Cove State Park, Newport Beach

If you’d prefer to stay within the confines of Orange County, you can see also see some gorgeous flower displays in their native habitat in a few particularly great spots!

The first is Crystal Cove. Spring is the perfect time to spread out a picnic blanket at Crystal Cove State Park, where the park’s backcountry trails lead through fields of our famous California poppies in addition to bush sunflowers, purple lupines, and fiddlenecks, which are usually at peak bloom between March and April.

While there are plenty of great spots to have your picnic, we recommend to the Moro Canyon Picnic Area, which provides picnic tables surrounded by native plants and easy access to trails where you can admire the blooms if you’d like to take a short hike afterward. If you prefer a (more) oceanfront setting (though the view is basically there no matter where you are), the Historic District’s picnic tables offer stunning coastal views just steps from the sand.

3. Hike Through the Wildflowers at Dana Point Headlands

Dates: March – May, 2025
Location: Dana Point Headlands Conservation Area

The second great local spot to see wildflowers is Dana Point Headlands. These blooms generally last a little bit longer than those in Crystal Cove, and they also have scenic trails that wind through protected coastal bluff scrub habitat where you can spot our famous California poppies in addition to some really beautiful purple lupines and wild buckwheat.

While there are a few great hikes, we recommend the Dana Point Headlands Preserve Trail. It’s is an easy one-mile trail that offers sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. If you’re lucky, you might even catch sight of migrating gray whales offshore (more on that later!).

Hop aboard a boat tour from Newport Beach or Dana Point Harbor and keep an eye out for dolphins and sea lions, too!

We often mention whale watching on these round-up lists since they are visible throughout the entire year, but it really is a must-do activity and spring is peak season for gray whale migration! Dana Point, known as the Whale Watching Capital of the World, offers incredible opportunities to see these majestic creatures up close (they even have an annual Festival of Whales we mention on our Winter List). However, if Newport is more local to you, Newport Beach also offers some great whale watching cruises worth taking.
