How to Help Those Affected by California Wildfires

If you’re like us, your thoughts have been with those affected by the devasting wildfires ripping through the Los Angeles area. Homes have been evacuated and many have even already lost their homes or places of business.

In times like this, our thoughts often go to a famous quote from Mr. Rogers: “When I was a boy, and I would see scary things on the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

We rounded up just a few of those helpers here. If you would like to help those affected by the LA wildfires, consider supporting one of the following wonderful organizations making a difference for those in need.

1. California Fire Foundation

California Fire Foundation provides emotional and financial assistance to families of fallen firefighters, the firefighters themselves, and the communities they protect. Their Wildlife & Disaster Relief Fund offers both immediate and long term support to affected communities.

2. American Red Cross

The American Red Cross is currently on the ground helping those in need. They are offering 24-hour emergency assistance, including shelter, meals and support for both emergency responders and those affected by the fires. You can donate to both their Southern California (serving Riverside, Orange, San Diego and other SoCal Counties) or Los Angeles affiliates.

3. World Central Kitchen

World Central Kitchen, founded by Chef José Andrés, provides free meals to first responders and families affected by the fires.

4. Direct Relief

Direct Relief provides N-95 masks, medicine, and other resources to healthcare agencies and first responders in wildfire-affected communities across California.

5. Animal Wellness Foundation

Animal Wellness Foundation is providing shelter and caring for animals evacuated by the fires, both large and small.

Who to Call if You Need Help

If you are personally affected by these fires, we encourage you to call 2-1-1. Based on your location, you will ping the nearest cell tower and be brought to the local 2-1-1 agency in order to get connected to the help you need. You can also visit their websites at:

Other Ways to Help

Finally, if you’re looking to help those affected by wildfires, check-in on your loved ones. If a they, a friend, a neighbor, or a pet needs to evacuate and you are able to offer them a safe place to go or direct resources to help (e.g. a meal, transportation, etc.), that could be some of the most direct and effective ways to make a difference.
