With ample parking and even a few shops that sell firewood, drinks, and snacks, it’s a popular destination for gatherings, marshmallow roasting, and enjoying the evening by the fire.
But that’s in the evening. During the day, the beach also offers excellent conditions for surfing, fishing, and wildlife viewing. It also has a few beachfront restaurants and eateries, making it a really well-rounded location for a laid back day!
Best Beach for Picnics: Salt Creek Beach
Located in Dana Point, Salt Creek Beach is perfect for picnics and casual gatherings. Located beneath the scenic cliffs adjacent to the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, the beach offers grassy areas with picnic tables and barbecue grills, so you can enjoy a fun gathering with gorgeous ocean views. After your picnic, you can take a leisurely stroll along the beach, explore the tide pools, or dip your feet in the surf.
Best Secluded Beach: Victoria Beach
A recent favorite by influencers, Victoria Beach in Laguna Beach is known for its seclusion and unique landmarks, such as the Pirate Tower (a 60 ft castle-inspired structure built in 1926 often mistaken for a lighthouse) and a circular man-made pool created from natural rock crevices and replenished by ocean tides.
Despite its popularity on social media, the beach remains relatively uncrowded due to its hidden access points, including a long stairways at the end of Victoria Drive or a more accessible path at Dumond Drive. It’s a favorite among locals and visitors looking for a quiet, picturesque beach experience. Because of its seclusion, parking can be a challenge, so we recommend arriving early.
Best Beach for People-Watching: Huntington Beach
On the flip side, if you’re looking for a little bit less quiet and a little more bustle and excitement, check out Huntington Beach. Also known as Surf City USA because of holding the world’s largest surfing competition annually, Huntington Beach is a major tourist destination and therefore perfect for people-watching.
The beach itself features a famous pier, volleyball courts, and numerous food and drink options along the boardwalk. There are very commonly buskers near the street corners and markets and other small festivals on Main Street directly across the street. Because of the numerous bars and restaurants on Main Street, it’s also not uncommon to see partiers out and about having a raucous good time.
Best Beach for Historic Charm: Seal Beach
For something a little less lively than Huntington but that still offers an enjoyable main street experience, Seal Beach offers a charming, small-town atmosphere with a beautiful pier and a sandy expanse. The historic wooden pier is the second longest in California, providing stunning ocean views and excellent fishing spots. Main Street, just steps from the beach, is lined with quaint shops, cafes, and restaurants that give visitors a taste of the town’s unique character and laid-back charm.
Just don’t expect to see any actual seals in Seal Beach—while seals were once more commonly found in the area, the only seal you’re likely to see now it “Slick,” the name of the bronze seal statue located on the pier.
