Located at the southern end of San Clemente, Trestles is renowned for its perfect waves and attracts surfers from around the world. This beach is divided into five sections: Church, Middles, Lowers, Uppers, and Cottons. Each area caters to different skill levels, from beginners at Church and Middles to more advanced surfers at Uppers and Cottons. Trestles is known for its consistent swell and is a favorite among local surfers.
Best Beach for Diving and Snorkeling: Little Corona del Mar Beach
Little Corona del Mar Beach is a hidden gem for locals and tourists looking to go diving or snorkeling. This small, protected cove offers clear waters and diverse marine life, making it an ideal spot for underwater exploration. The rocky outcrops and calm waters provide a safe environment for both beginners and experienced divers.
Best Beach for Families: Newport Beach
Newport Beach is ideal for families for so many reasons. Not only is it easily accessible from the 55 and PCH, but it is full of amenities and things to do for people of all ages. In addition to making the most of typical beach fun, families can also enjoy renting bikes or rollerblading along the boardwalk, walking along the pier, or getting an ice cream or meal from one of the numerous shops and restaurants within walking distance. It’s also in close proximity to the Fun Zone in Balboa, duffy boats and paddle boarding in the harbor, and everything else Balboa and Newport have to offer!
Best Beach to Bring a Date: Laguna Beach
Laguna Beach Main Beach is the perfect beach for a romantic day. This iconic beach, with its historic lifeguard tower and stunning views, offers plenty of activities to enjoy with your significant other. Stroll along the boardwalk, enjoy a game of volleyball or basketball, or simply relax on the grassy park areas. The beach is also conveniently located near downtown Laguna Beach, which provides super easy access to charming shops, art galleries, and oceanfront dining options.
For a truly romantic experience, take a walk up to Heisler Park, which offers breathtaking views and beautiful walking paths along the cliffs. As the sun sets, the view from Main Beach is legitimately stunning. If you’re there on a lucky night, it’s not super uncommon to even catch some bioluminescence.
Best Beach to Bring Your Dog: Huntington Dog Beach
Huntington Dog Beach is a favorite among dog owners and their canine companions. Located at the northern end of Huntington Beach, this off-leash beach stretches from Seapoint Street to 21st Street, allowing dogs to run free and play in the surf. The beach features amenities such as restrooms, showers, and free dog waste bags. The friendly atmosphere and dedicated dog zone make it a perfect spot for dogs to socialize and enjoy the ocean
Best Beach for Nature Lovers: Crystal Cove State Beach
Crystal Cove State Beach offers some of the most breathtaking coastal views and natural experiences in Orange County. The park features several hiking trails with stunning ocean views, wildflowers, and lush canyons. It’s also home to some of the best tide pools in the area (though honorable mentions to both Little Corona del Mar Beach and Treasure Island Beach, too). Thanks to the combination of cliffs, rock structures, waves, and foliage, the sunsets here are also truly spectacular.
Best Beach for Bonfires: Bolsa Chica State Beach
Bolsa Chica State Beach is easily the best spot to host or enjoy a beach bonfire. The beach is equipped with dozens of fire rings available on a first-come, first-served basis. With ample parking and even a few shops that sell firewood, drinks, and snacks, it’s a popular destination for gatherings, marshmallow roasting, and enjoying the evening by the fire.
But that’s in the evening. During the day, the beach also offers excellent conditions for surfing, fishing, and wildlife viewing. It also has a few beachfront restaurants and eateries, making it a really well-rounded location for a laid back day!
Best Beach for Picnics: Salt Creek Beach
Located in Dana Point, Salt Creek Beach is perfect for picnics and casual gatherings. Located beneath the scenic cliffs adjacent to the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, the beach offers grassy areas with picnic tables and barbecue grills, so you can enjoy a fun gathering with gorgeous ocean views. After your picnic, you can take a leisurely stroll along the beach, explore the tide pools, or dip your feet in the surf.
Best Secluded Beach: Victoria Beach
A recent favorite by influencers, Victoria Beach in Laguna Beach is known for its seclusion and unique landmarks, such as the Pirate Tower (a 60 ft castle-inspired structure built in 1926 often mistaken for a lighthouse) and a circular man-made pool created from natural rock crevices and replenished by ocean tides.
Despite its popularity on social media, the beach remains relatively uncrowded due to its hidden access points, including a long stairways at the end of Victoria Drive or a more accessible path at Dumond Drive. It’s a favorite among locals and visitors looking for a quiet, picturesque beach experience. Because of its seclusion, parking can be a challenge, so we recommend arriving early.
Best Beach for People-Watching: Huntington Beach
On the flip side, if you’re looking for a little bit less quiet and a little more bustle and excitement, check out Huntington Beach. Also known as Surf City USA because of holding the world’s largest surfing competition annually, Huntington Beach is a major tourist destination and therefore perfect for people-watching.
The beach itself features a famous pier, volleyball courts, and numerous food and drink options along the boardwalk. There are very commonly buskers near the street corners and markets and other small festivals on Main Street directly across the street. Because of the numerous bars and restaurants on Main Street, it’s also not uncommon to see partiers out and about having a raucous good time.
Best Beach for Historic Charm: Seal Beach
For something a little less lively than Huntington but that still offers an enjoyable main street experience, Seal Beach offers a charming, small-town atmosphere with a beautiful pier and a sandy expanse. The historic wooden pier is the second longest in California, providing stunning ocean views and excellent fishing spots. Main Street, just steps from the beach, is lined with quaint shops, cafes, and restaurants that give visitors a taste of the town’s unique character and laid-back charm.
Just don’t expect to see any actual seals in Seal Beach—while seals were once more commonly found in the area, the only seal you’re likely to see now it “Slick,” the name of the bronze seal statue located on the pier.
