Red Rock Canyon offers one of the best hikes in Orange County, with scenes that mirror the awe-inspiring landscapes of Utah’s Zion National Park—just on a much smaller scale. But unlike Zion, you don’t need to travel far to experience the breathtaking beauty of Red Rock Canyon; it’s just a short hike away, waiting to be explored! It’s a reminder that nature’s marvels are closer than you might think, waiting to inspire, astonish, and connect you to the beauty of the great outdoors.

Getting There and Parking

To embark on this adventure, start at the small dedicated parking lot adjacent to the Ralphs shopping center, located at 26701 Portola Pkwy, Foothill Ranch, CA 92610. OC Parks charges a modest parking fee here. Alternatively, you can utilize overflow parking within the shopping center itself, free of charge. If you choose the overflow option, be prepared for a slightly longer walk to reach the trailhead.

From the parking lot, head onto Borrego Trail and continue for approximately 1.5 miles until you reach Red Rock Trail. Look out for a picnic bench beneath a shady tree, which marks the junction. Make a left onto Red Rock Trail, and your journey will take you about half a mile to Red Rock Canyon. The trail may narrow as you progress and can sometimes be challenging to follow, but you’ll be tracing the creek bed upward.

The Red Rock Canyon Hike

Explore this 4.2-mile out-and-back trail near Foothill Ranch, California. It is generally considered an easy route and typically takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete. Here are some key highlights:
