OC Community Rallies Together to Support Maui After Devastating Wildfires

In an amazing display of solidarity, volunteers from across Orange County have come together in an incredible way in the face of the unprecedented and devastating wildfires that engulfed Maui this month.

Front and center in this inspiring movement is Community Relief Maui, a newly formed organization formed by the Hawaii Community Foundation that emerged just last week. They are driven by the singular mission of coordinating donations, resources, and support for the resilient people of Maui, many of whom have lost everything to the flames.

It’s the embodiment of kindness in overdrive. In their endeavor to provide multifaceted assistance, Community Relief Maui has not only directed individuals towards avenues for monetary contributions, such as mauicounty.gov and local Maui nonprofits, but also established physical donation sites for tangible support. These sites in Orange County are currently located at Nation Golf in San Clemente, Josesea Wetsuits in Costa Mesa, and The Tattoo Gallery in Huntington Beach — all local businesses who stepped up to help make a difference.

Over the weekend and well into this week, the Orange County community has responded with boundless generosity, with locals flocking to volunteer their time and effort. From receiving and sorting items to packing boxes and transporting them to a designated warehouse, their dedication has painted a picture of resilience and compassion in the face of adversity.

“This group provides an outlet to those who wish they could be on the ground helping,” shared Mason Miller, a local Orange County volunteer who grew up in Maui. “Watching my friends on social media gathering supplies, coordinating needs, and delivering goods and meals to people in need but being stuck in California made me feel useless. Being able to help with this group send supplies gave me a sense of contribution, and I am grateful for that.”

While many essential needs have been met through the outpouring of support, Community Relief Maui continues to encourage the donation of specific items that are still in high demand. Camping gear, gas cans, propane, generators, phone chargers, flashlights, batteries, and tarps are among the most sought-after items.

The organization is also issuing a call for continued volunteers over the coming weeks, recognizing that sustained effort is crucial in rebuilding and supporting the Maui community.

Community Relief Maui’s rapid formation and impact, coupled with the dedication of volunteers from Orange County and beyond, exemplify the extraordinary power of unity in times of crisis. Through these combined efforts, lives are being mended, and the spirit of compassion burns brighter than ever before.
